50th Anniversary History

Jan/Feb 1971 Troop changed over to long trousers.

1970 / 71 SAI purchased Lightship “Albatross”.  Work parties on conversion in Custom House Docks.  Moved to Dun Laoghaire Jun’71.  Commissioned as Training Ship Sep’72.  Peter Kerruish awarded Medal of Merit for his role in project.

1971 / 72 Boathouse built on Church Road.  Work began Feb’71 and lasted until late Spring’72.

1972 Venture Unit formed including girls, led by Brian Meyer

1973 Built Mirror dinghy from timber kit.

Jul/Aug 1975 Six members of Group attend Nordjamb 75 -14th World Jamboree at Lillehammer, Norway.

24 Jul 1977 First capsize of Sea Wolf.  All hands survived!

Sep 1978 Second capsize of Sea Wolf.

24 Nov 1979 Collected new BP18 fibreglass hull from Midleton, Co.Cork, having sold “Seagull” for £350.

Mar/Jul 1980 BP hull timber fitting out by Goodbody’s of Wicklow.  Named “Shearwater” in Oct’80.  Later rigged for sailing (app 1984?).

August 1986 Hurricane Charlie floodwaters on the River Dargle erode our Powerscourt site.  Since then Powerscourt camps have mostly been at the “Coombe” site on a bend further downstream.

Sept 1986 Beaver Colony formed, led by Clarice Kerruish.

April 1988 Group produces a Gang Show for 3 performances in Dalkey Town Hall.

1990 Girls admitted to the Sea Scout Troop!

1 Jan 2004 SAI and CSI form new association, Scouting Ireland, but local Groups continue as before.

Sept 2006 Girls admitted to the Cub Pack!
