50th Anniversary History

 

1 Feb 1961 First attempt to form Sea Rover Crew, which disbanded later in the year.

Summer 1961 Gift of two old rowing boats from A.Guinness Son & Co. Refurbished and named “Baden Powell” and “Victory”.  Later given back to donor!

August 1961 Purchased 20’ gaff ketch rigged ex-Irish Lights whaler “Gannet” for £90.

Boat renamed “Sea Wolf”.

Easter 1963 Gold Panning Expedition at Avoca.  RTE Radio Interview.

Aug 1963 Two members of Troop attend 11th World Jamboree at Marathon in Greece.

 

Jun 1963 New 18’ rowing boat, designed by M.Stopford, built in Galway for £100.

Named “Seagull”.

Summer 1963 41st Dublin given the old Dalkey Sea Scouts designation of “3rd Port of Dublin”.

2 Oct 1963 Sea Rovers formed again, led by Tom Rice.

23 Aug 1963 Edward Sarratt awarded Gilt Cross for Gallantry for rescue of small boy in Coal Harbour, Dun Laoghaire.

Winter 1964 Presented with 14ft sailing dinghy “Dumbo”.

1 Mar 1965 Boy Scouts of Ireland and Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland form Federation of Irish Scout Associations.

Easter 1968 First canoe expedition on River Barrow with 42nd Killiney and 8u Calafort Monkstown.  PBK22 canoes – canvas on plywood frame.

Sept 1968 Presented with Heron dinghy.

Nov 1968 Diamond Jubilee of Scouting.  BSI revamped as the Scout Association of Ireland.  New rules included Venture Scouts and girls!  Scoutmasters became Scout Leaders.  This led to the closure of our Sea Rover Crew, followed by the formation of Venture Scouts in 1972.
